On the existence of life beyond Earth: Prometheus

Yesterday was a lovely day to watch a movie. It was interesting how there were a lot of people inside the cinema, given that it was Wednesday. It was almost packed and I can only assume that this coming weekend will be a good weekend for Prometheus.

The first thing that went through my mind upon realizing what the story was about: “Ah! Another Goldilocks hypothesis at work!“.

When I watched the movie Battleship few months ago, I was not at all sure about the reason why scientists must: first, find the existence of other life forms in the universe; or second, establish contact with them, if they do really exist. What that movie showed was a grim picture. Of course man is insatiable for knowledge!

In Prometheus, it pretty much advocated the Goldilocks hypothesis, with a motley mixture of scientists and experts probing a terrestrial body that purportedly supported life in the end of the 21st century.

When I first saw the group of stars, I thought that they were referring to the Pleiades star cluster,  but it was a start short. Anyway, I said it before and I will say it again, I’m a supporter of the Rare Earth hypothesis so I take this movie with a grain of salt.

Visually, it was a stunning film, offering the most stunning camera work on various landscapes. To say that it was a visual-feast was not enough. We only watched it on 2D and I wondered how it would fair in 3D. My favorite part was the star map scene, with the hologram depiction of the cosmos. As a lover of astronomy, the movie made me sigh a lot out of happiness.

But I must admit that story-wise, I started with a feeling of ‘Wow!’, progressing to a feeling of ‘What?!’ because the movie became extremely predictable towards the end. I literally laughed so hard because of the absurdity of some scenes and I just wanted all of them to die. The last scene was perfection, though.

Michael Fassbender was a stunner. I did not even want to touch my food after seeing him. He was on the extremely leaner side for this movie but it suited him well. I had mixed feelings towards Charlize’s character though. Her unflinching demeanor did not help much with the curious feeling of “I think she’s not that bad after all” and I was quite right. Nice jackets/uniform on her though.
